The first record was the 1885 Christmas carol “Tempus Adest Floridum,” which has Latin words taken from the thirteenth century Carmina Burana. John Mason Neale’s arrangement of the song in 1853 made it synonymous with Christmas. Another recording from the same time period is the epic ballad, “Good King Wenceslas,” about the journey of the Bohemian Duke Wenceslas I to help a poor traveler on St. Stephen’s Day, which falls within the traditional Twelve Days of Christ.
